Recently the Intermediate Building had some special visitors as the Director of Sanitation and Mayor Sally Hutton paid a visit to the school. The special visitors were there to recognize sixth grade student, Blake Jones for his heroic actions last summer that saved his aunt's life.
"Blake's aunt, Lisa (Scheele) Garner, was in town visiting last summer. When Lisa is in town, she'll help family members by cleaning up and getting rid of things. That means a trip or two to the landfill. June 20, 2014, was one of those occasions," reports Blake's mother, Rebecca Scheele. "She and Blake were throwing things into the container, and after one of the throws, Blake turned around and Lisa was gone. He then looked down, into the empty space where no container was at the time (next to the container where they were throwing things), and there she was . . . lying there . . . unconscious. She had fallen 8’ – 12’ down into the empty space. Before Blake could react to that particular tragedy, he had to stop another tragedy from happening: A truck was backing up to put a container into the space where Lisa was! Blake screamed at the top of his lungs and waved his arms like crazy trying to stop the truck. After what seemed like an eternity, Blake finally got the driver’s attention, and he stopped . . . when he was only about 6’ from her. Lisa was rushed to the hospital. After a few tests and several hours later, she was released with 7 stitches in her head, a concussion, a broken collar bone, and 4 out of 5 of her lower back bones broken," said Scheele. "Something to think about," Scheele added, "Every other time Lisa had gone to the landfill, she went alone. This time God sent Blake with her!"
Blake was presented with a Citizen Commendation certificate, a State of Indiana Life-Saving medal and $50 VISA gift card. Mother, Becky Scheele, and his Aunt Lisa were both on hand to see him recognized.
